Santiago Cathedral is the goal of the Camino and the heart of the city, but its visit confuses many people: is there a fee? what's the botafumeiro? can you go up on the roof? The short answer is that entering the temple is free, but there are paid experiences well worth it. This guide clarifies what to see, what to book and how to organise yourself.

The key: separate the free part (the temple, the Apostle's tomb) from the special visits (Pórtico de la Gloria, rooftops, museum), which require a ticket and, sometimes, advance booking.

What's free

  • The temple. Entering the cathedral to pray or to see it is free.
  • The Apostle's tomb. The crypt with the relics of St James, beneath the high altar.
  • The embrace of the Apostle (when enabled), behind the altar.
  • The Pilgrim's Mass, daily (see below).

What's paid (and worth it)

Visit What it includes
Pórtico de la Gloria Master Mateo's masterpiece, restored (timed ticket)
Rooftops Guided tour over the granite roof, with views
Cathedral Museum Cloister, Treasury, crypt and Pazo de Xelmírez

⭐ Tip: the Pórtico de la Gloria and the rooftops are visited with a timed ticket, and they sell out in season. Book them online ahead; they're the two most rewarding experiences beyond the temple.

The botafumeiro

The botafumeiro is the giant censer (over 50 kg) that eight tiraboleiros swing across the transept. It doesn't fly every day: it does so at certain Pilgrim's Masses and on special dates (it can also be requested and paid for by groups). If you want to see it, check the official calendar before going and arrive early for the Mass.

The Pilgrim's Mass

It's the daily Mass (usually at 12:00, with another in the evening) that crowns the Camino. It fills the cathedral: if you want a spot, arrive well ahead. During Mass, tourist visiting isn't allowed.

Practical tips

  • Dress respectfully: it's a working temple.
  • Large backpacks aren't allowed inside; there's storage for pilgrims nearby.
  • Combine the cathedral with the rest of the old town in Santiago in one day.
  • The Holy Door (Quintana) opens only in a Holy Year.

What we don't recommend

  1. Assuming you'll see the botafumeiro. It only flies at certain Masses and dates; check.
  2. Arriving right at 12:00 for the Mass. It'll be full; go earlier.
  3. Skipping the Pórtico de la Gloria for not booking. It's the cathedral's jewel.
  4. Turning up with a huge backpack. They won't let you in; use storage.

Common mistakes

⚠️ Warning: the slip-ups we see most.

  1. Not booking the Pórtico or rooftops in season: they sell out.
  2. Confusing the free temple with the paid visits. They're different things.
  3. Not checking the botafumeiro calendar. The most common disappointment.

In one sentence

Santiago Cathedral is visited free in its temple and Apostle's tomb, and paid in its jewels —the Pórtico de la Gloria and rooftops, which should be booked—, with the botafumeiro as a magical moment if you coincide with it. It's the heart of Santiago in one day.
