Girona became a Game of Thrones set in its sixth season (2016), and its medieval old town fits so well that you'll recognise the locations instantly. The city played Braavos and King's Landing, and today it's a favourite stop for fans of the show. This guide gathers the real locations, how to link them on foot and what to bear in mind.

The best part: all the locations are in the old town, five minutes from one another, so the route is walked in a morning. And they're beautiful places in their own right, whether or not you watch the show.

The main locations

  • Cathedral steps. The 90 Baroque steps were the Great Sept of Baelor in King's Landing. The most iconic Girona location in the show.
  • El Call (Jewish quarter). Its medieval lanes played Braavos, where Arya wanders. One of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe.
  • Sant Pere de Galligants. The Romanesque monastery also appeared as Braavos.
  • Carrer de Sant Llorenç / Pujada de Sant Domènec. Streets and stairways you'll recognise from Arya's chases.
  • Pont de Pedra and the Onyar river. The bridge and the colourful houses, seen in Braavos scenes.
  • Passeig Arqueològic (the walls). Walls that served as a backdrop in several sequences.

A walking route

Order Stop
1 Pont de Pedra and the Onyar houses
2 El Call (Jewish quarter)
3 The steps and Cathedral
4 Pujada de Sant Domènec
5 Sant Pere de Galligants
6 Passeig Arqueològic (walls)

⭐ Tip: there are themed guided tours of Game of Thrones that pinpoint each scene with stills from the shoot; if you're a big fan, they're worth it. Going solo? Download a locations map beforehand.

How to combine it

The locations route overlaps almost entirely with the normal old-town visit, so you can do both at once. We link it with what to see in Girona in one day: same places, double reading.

What we don't recommend

  1. Coming just for the show's photos. Girona is much more than a set; enjoy its history too.
  2. Climbing the steps at midday in summer. Crowds and heat; go first thing.
  3. Disturbing the residents. El Call is a lived-in quarter; respect the quiet and the doorways.

Common mistakes

⚠️ Warning: the slip-ups we see most.

  1. Going without a locations map. Without references, it's hard to place the scenes.
  2. Confusing Girona with other Spanish locations. The show also filmed in Peñíscola, Seville and the Bardenas; not everything is Girona.
  3. Doing it in a rush. It deserves stops: each scene is also a monument.

In one sentence

Girona and Game of Thrones is walking Braavos and the Great Sept of Baelor through a medieval old town that is both set and monument. A walking route that enriches the visit in Girona in one day.
